The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
Long but worth the read. Its about revenge, love, money, and Europe set around the 1800s. It is fascinating and has you rooting for characters and guessing on plots. Characters are from around the world and the story takes place in jail sells, houses, and courts in France (and Italy) with beautifully described settings surrounding bandits, murderers, beautiful women, kings, nobles, and merchants.
The Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell
Intense but enlightening novel about a Navy SEAL, his training in the states and his fateful mission in Afghanistan. It has plenty of action and suspense. If you have no interest in the military process at all it might not be the best book, but it taught me a lot about the war and the soldiers fighting in it on both sides.
